Description

Samuel DuBois Cook was a brilliant scholar. The most decent of men. A humanist. A bridge builder. A truth teller. A trailblazer in white dominated higher education. Martin Luther King's soulmate. A fellow son of God. This volume celebrates all of these in the teacher and the mentor that was Dr. Cook - in the words of his students at Dillard and Duke University, who loved him back. He was "that teacher" to all of us. He remains our moral compass today. Our nation and our world miss his voice. In these essays, we do our best to reflect that voice for ourselves, our children, and our children's children.
Conceived by Karen Cook, Andy Burness, and the Cook family, Roses for the Soul includes remembrances and reflections from former students and individuals influenced by Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook's visionary leadership, life, and teachings. The volume's title, Roses for the Soul, was selected by Mrs. Sylvia F. Cook and references a speech Dr. Cook gave on the Duke University quad in 1968 after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The genuine warmth of the relationships Dr. Cook developed with students across his career lie at the heart of the tributes to him that people this volume.
